We pronounce the name of this valley four different
ways... the Kansas way, the San Diego way, the ignorant way (mine) and the right
way (why pee oh). You could infer from this that "we" don't pronounce it properly and you
would be correct. Regardless, it has a rich history and is one of the last truly
native areas left in Hawaii. Hanalei, a umpteen generation Hawaiian native,
drove us through the valley in a 4 wheel drive van and gave one of the most
interesting and opinionated tours I've ever taken, anyplace, anytime, anywhere.
